The agreement to create the Kazakhstan-German Institute of Science and Technology (KGI) was signed during the visit of the Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of GermanyChancellor Olaf Scholz to Kazakhstan on September 16, 2024.

On September 26, the Kazakhstan-German Institute of Science and Technology will open in the East Kazakhstan region, based at East Kazakhstan Technical University named after D. Serikbayev. This is a joint project of EKTU, the Kazakhstan-German University (KGU), and German technical universities such as the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology, Ruhr University Bochum, the University of Stuttgart, Clausthal University of Technology, and Brandenburg University of Technology.

The focus areas of KGI include geology, rare and rare-earth elements, geological-mineralogical mapping, geomechanics, powder metallurgy and additive technologies, waste processing in the mining and metallurgical industries, GIS technologies, materials science, ecology, and life safety.

A dual-degree master's program in Metallurgy will be implemented in partnership with Brandenburg University of Technology at KGI, and dual-degree programs are also planned in the fields of Geology, Life Safety and Environmental Protection, Mechanics and Metalworking, and Mining Engineering with Freiberg University of Mining and Technology, Ruhr University Bochum, the University of Stuttgart, and Clausthal University of Technology. This will provide students with a unique opportunity to receive education from leading technical universities in both countries.

Thus, the Kazakhstan-German Institute of Science and Technology will promote innovation and advanced research in Kazakhstan, strengthen scientific ties, and foster the exchange of knowledge and best practices between Kazakhstan and Germany.
