In recent years, a competence-based approach, i.e., to the acquisition of appropriate skills by students, has been added to the paradigm shift from teaching to learning. Key competencies are related to the ability of a person to interact with others, to cooperate, to work with information, including in English. Therefore, the online student presentation contest held on 07.04.2021 was called “English for my Career”.
7 presentations that met the selection criteria were selected for participation in the competition. In their presentations, students told why they chose this particular profession; what, in their opinion, are the most important requirements for it; what disciplines they need to master to become a specialist, and how important the knowledge of English is for their future career. Of course, the participants had to conduct a study on the requirements for working in their field of interest and the need to apply communication skills in English for successful career growth.
The contest participants demonstrated a logical and clear presentation of the topic in competent English both in written (on slides) and in oral forms. The jury noted the high level of English language proficiency, as well as the ability to clearly express thoughts, argue their points and draw conclusions. The difference in the total score of the winners’ results was only 1 point.
The winner of the competition was Aruzhan Manapova, the second degree diplomas were awarded to Yerkainar Slyambekov and Azhar Dautkhanova. The presentation of Anel Omarbekova earned a diploma of the third degree.
